KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — Angry Birds Space Encounter at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex proves to be a cool adventure, kids say.
“They love Angry Birds,” said Doug Manning of Bloomington, Ill., who accompanied his two sons Nick and Tommy and his wife, Jen, to the grand opening of the new exhibit. “Our sons were very excited about this.”
The Angry Birds Space Encounter, which was developed by NASA and Rovio Entertainment, which is the creator of the addictive app, is located on the grounds of Kennedy Space Center for at least 18 months.
“If we can get the kids interested and then add the math and science, that’s great,” said Astronaut Don Pettit, whose science lessons from aboard the International Space Station went viral among fans.
One of Pettit’s most enjoyable and widely circulated video was his Angry Birds demonstration, teaching how gravity impacts trajectory paths. During that video he shoots his Angry Bird plush toy across the interior of the ISS with a home-made slingshot. It was that video that put the notion in the heads of the NASA and Rovio teams that a live-action exhibit of Angry Birds Space would be a compelling project.
“I have my 6-year-old daughter here and I have to admit, she’s actually a little better and some of the games than I am and she’s having a blast,” said Dan Mitchell of Rovio Entertainment, who was on hand for the opening. “I know Angry Birds will bring enjoyment for those from 6 to 60.”
