HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Jockey Chantal Sutherland will be among 21,000 runners in Sunday’s combined Surf City USA Marathon and Half Marathon in Huntington Beach on Super Bowl Sunday morning.
“It’s my first time running the half and there’s no excuse — it’s right by my house,” said the Canadian-born beauty who races mainly at Santa Anita Park. Sutherland will run the half.
More than 21,000 runners are expected for the popular race that boasts an oceanfront course and is on track to overtake competitors as the largest combined event in entries.
“I race because I want to challenge myself,” Sutherland said. “I like to stay in shape and like most of the jockeys, I run.”
Sutherland also takes Pilates and yoga and eats a strictly healthy regimen.
“I eat nothing processed, and no sugar,” she said. “The worst thing I do is put creamer in my coffee.”
Sutherland ran the 2,000-meter distance in high school in Canada and played collegiate field hockey and tried out for the Canadian Olympic team, but her height prevented her from attaining a spot on the team.
She moved from dressage and showing horses into the racing arena and never looked back.
“I love what I do for a living,” Sutherland said. “Only 2 percent of the jockeys are women, so I like being a trailblazer. And it’s a lot of fun.”
Sutherland joins 21,000 other racers on Super Bowl Sunday in Huntington Beach at the Surf City USA Marathon and Half Marathon.

Race Day – Sunday, February 2nd, 2014 – Full Marathon Start: 6:30 a.m. Wave Start; Half Marathon Start 7:45 a.m. Wave Start (15 waves!)
All races start on Pacific Coast Highway at Huntington Street in front of the Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, at 21100 Pacific Coast Hwy, Huntington Beach, California.
The finish line is about 300 yards north of the start also on Pacific Coast Highway.
Please no backpacks on the course (other than authorized medical/course assistants).
